My Thoughts (Spoilers)
I am so happy that I finally got around to read this book. I bought this book during the summer, and I am so happy I managed to get it around the fall season, mostly because of the fact that this was the book that was picked for me last month. It has been a rough month getting back onto the swing of school and whatnot.
First off, I don't think I can go through this review without talking about how, like so many others tend to, I love Laini Taylor's writing. She writes really beautiful words, with such complicated stories and worlds. Similar to her previous trilogy, you don't really know what to expect until the end of the book.
So with the beginning of the book, we start out with mostly Lazlo's point of view. And honestly, I didn't really care much about him until later in the book. Yeah is was cool to see his past, growing up with monks, being adopted by a library and how he isolated himself from others his age. As the story went on, I really started to like him more, especially once he started to interact with Sarai.
Now I really love seeing the 'godspawns'. Ruby, Feral, Sparrow, Minya and Sarai. I started really loving them as soon as I started reading about them. Ruby with how passionate she is, and how her fire was never really there for violence but for the love and passion for others was a different change of pace regarding the element. Feral on the other hand was very on the fence for me. I found his powers with storms cool, but his character was very uncomfortable for me. Sparrow did not deserve half of the crap that come her way. While the others seemed harden for the past, she was almost innocent in actions, and I felt like her powers really suited her. Now Minya was like my favourite character until I realized how psychotic she really was. She was a very aggressive for someone who liked like a six year old.
Sarai was my favourite character. I loved how complexed her character was, her gifted being involved with dreams, and her mother being the goddess of misery, her father being the one who killed the gods and other children like her. I just really enjoy seeing how complex her character and point of view on what is going on.
I found only one of the two relationships that ended up sort of developing in the story acceptable. Which it happened to be Sarai and Lazlo's, their interactions were both educational for each and every time they interact they developed. Ruby's and Feral's relationship just made me very uncomfortable.
